A $2,400 desk and shelving: debit 1500 2,400, credit 1010 Checking 2,400. Depreciated over its useful life.

  • Fixed asset — Equipment, vehicles, furniture or property you will use for more than a year. Recorded at cost and depreciated, not expensed.
  • Depreciation — Spreading the cost of a long-lived asset over the years you use it, instead of expensing it all at once.
  • 1590 Accumulated Depreciation — The running total of depreciation taken on all fixed assets. A contra asset, so the balance sheet reads cost minus wear.
  • Chart of accounts — The list of buckets your money can be sorted into: assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, expenses. New workspaces start with a default set you can rename or extend.
