Placed-in-service date

The date a fixed asset became ready and available for business use, which starts depreciation.

Where it is used: Fixed assets uses this date—not necessarily the purchase or payment date—to calculate book and tax depreciation.

Example

Equipment bought June 1 but installed and ready June 15 has a June 15 placed-in-service date.
